Rutland House
We were appointed to design a replacement home on a stunning site overlooking Rutland Water.
The design responds to the brief by distilling different functions allowing us to “zone” the house as follows:
- Utilitarian volume containing garage, store, utility, plant and cloakroom
- Teenage bedrooms
- Kitchen volume
- Guest volume containing two bedrooms, a bathroom and a small living space with a kitchenette
- Master bedroom/ snug/ study
- Between the ground floor volumes, and underneath the first floor volume, we enclose a space which becomes the main living area. Its central position connects all the different volumes of the house as a communal area
By splitting the brief of the house into different functions, we can create different physical zones. Instead of one substantial volume, we can create individual volumes with their own functions. This allows the different users to have some privacy, but then enjoy coming together within the living space, while breaking down both mass and scale.
