Edge House
Nestled along the stunning coastline of Big Sur in California, renowned for its breathtaking beauty, Edge House is perched directly on the shoreline, embodying both a striking architectural form and a profound connection to its natural surroundings.
Located in Monterey, at the northern end of the famous coastal road, this project was conceived with a singular goal: to create a home where family can gather surrounded by the incredible landscape.
Inspired by the expansive views of the site, Edge House takes on the shape of a 3-pointed star. Each wing is carefully positioned to capture optimal light and views, crafting a dynamic and welcoming space.
Each wing serves a distinct purpose: one faces west to capture panoramic ocean views, another faces east to welcome the morning sun, while a third wing provides a secluded space for a private office, separated by an internal courtyard. At its centre are the living spaces, and at the central pivot point, there is a beautiful helical staircase crowned with an oculus of the same diameter.
This thoughtful layout ensures the clients’ brief has been achieved while achieving uninterrupted vistas of the sea. Leveraging the site’s topography, Edge House includes a lower floor level comprising a chill-out area and bar, along with a spacious spa suite featuring an indoor pool facing the Pacific, connected to an outdoor seawater pool, inviting residents to relax surrounded by nature.
The east wing contains a cinema room, as well as storage, utility, and technical spaces, while the north wing houses a large garage, with a glazed wall connecting to the snug.
The landscaping around Edge House is kept simple and natural, with native plants and gravel pathways blending the home into its surroundings. It is a place where minimalist architecture, coupled with the tactility of materials, meets comfort, offering a serene retreat along the California coast.
